Go with a diesel. Don't worry about the extra upfront cost. It will come back to you when you sell it. As for extra maintenance, yes you have to buy more oil but either way you are changing the oil at a certain interval in both gas or diesel.
And the DEF cost.... one gallon of DEF for every 50 gallons of diesel or about 16 cents per gallon of diesel burnt.
The pure enjoyment of pulling with a truck that is not screaming to go up a hill/mountain is worth every penny.
