What is the loaded weight of the trailer?
If money is no object, diesel is great but if it's a smaller (say 9000lb) trailer, gas is perfectly suitable even in the mountains.
Now by the time you get up around 12-14,000lb, performance with a gas engine gets marginal, particularly in mountains. It will still get you there but you will notice a distinct difference.
