Use a toy hauler as a TT? No toys to haul.

I need a travel trailer but I like the open floor plans of toy haulers. I don't have any bikes or quads but the ramp would be nice to move junk every now and then.

Any reason on why not use toy haulers in place of a travel trailer? I can add my own rocking chair if needed.

  • Thanks to all for the feedback. Will be shopping around for a TH :)
  • Toy haulers make great travel trailers but realize they are typically heavier and have a larger draft than the same size TT. Our biggest adjustment going from toy hauler to another type of RV was fluid capacities. We got used to be able to haul 150 gallons of fresh water with a large 10 gallon hot water heater and big waste tanks. Having 40 gallons of fuel on board with 50A generator service was also nice since I could run anything off the toy hauler I could stick inside.

Your DW may give you mixed reviews on the fold up furniture inside toy haulers. The lighter models use flimsy mechanisms and may not be as comfortable as the nicer heavier models. I am also tall and enjoyed the tall roof line of toy hauler. We had big picture windows that made the toy hauler feel even bigger inside than it was due to the the tall ceiling and open floor plan.
  • I use mine without toys all of the time. It is nice to be able to load a pallet of beer in the back.

I already had the toys to load in the back, but we have also set up a pack-and-play for the kids to sleep in while they are little (they will roll off the couch/beds in the back). Or a play area if the weather is bad. Or a really nice large storage area if you stay in the trailer long term. Or a place to carry all your junk if you ever move.

I've used my trailer as a garage for the bikes, as a play pen for the kids, as a buffet with the ramp being the entry, as a movie theater with a projector shining against the back wall.
  • The only issue I see is the convenience of having a ramp door will more than likely be outweighed by the additional cost of the toy hauler as compared to a similarly featured travel trailer.

But, if you find what you like at a price you agree to... GO FOR IT!
  • Get toys, developing wholesome hobbies :)

    Problem solved
  • If you like what you see why not, a toy hauler is a travel trailer you know. Even if I didn't have toys I would have probably purchased a toy hauler, being 6'10" tall I never really fit in the conventional trailer as I was allways hitting my head on the AC unit and could never really set at a bench type table. In my toy hauler I don't have to worry about hitting my head to much and I can do what I want with the space.
  • We use it for a dog pen and when other couples come along for fantasy fest or biketoberfest, it becomes a second bedroom.
  • No toys.....use the 'garage' as a dance floor, a hobby shop, a barber shop, an big ole empty space

It's going to be your RV.....use it for what you like and what floats your boat.
