my 16k Reese manual slider has a lever arm that I simply move it back to maneuver position. The hitch may slide back by itself if on a slight incline or if its on level ground I hold the trailer brake and move the truck forward till it locks in maneuver position. I've never used the landing jacks to make the switch.
Some of the old sliding hitches require using the landing gear to take weight off the hitch so it could be moved but I don't think they make them anymore...thankfully.
