Want to upgrade tires

I have a 2010 Montana 3400RL with a total (ship+max carrying-tongue)weight of 13540 pounds and have been using GY Marathons 235/80R16 and blowing out tires and damaging sides of RV. I would like to upgrade to a better tire ( maybe a G rated tire or an LT tire but do not know which. Also how can I find out what pressure my rims will take in the tires. Montana will not tell me the pressure rating of my RIMS.

What pressure do you actually need in a G-rated tire? I'm asking because I put one Sailun G-rated tire on my Hitchhiker-II after a blowout in May. I'm running 80 psi in the Sailun, same as the other tires: two F-rated, and one E-rated which hasn't blown out (yet).

You need to run max pressure to get max capacity. For example, here is Goodyear's inflation table for their RV tires. Scroll down to the second chart and you'll see the 614 specs.

A 2010 my require a wheel upgrade to go to G rated tires. So decide if you want to go to 17.5 rims or stay with 16". I would go Sailun S637 and rims if you need them, however make sure the larger diameter tires fit or you will have to pay for GY G614's. If that is the case I would go the 17.5 rims and 215/75R17.5's. The 17.5's are slightly smaller in diameter verses your Maratbombs.

Note a LT235/85R16G at 80 lbs inflation is rated at 3042(aka LRE).

OP shouldn't need a wheel upgrade as he has the same rig as me. Many Montana owners have done this very same upgrade and are able to use their factory rims with no ill effects. There is plenty of room between the tires and inside of the wheel well for the tire upgrade. As mentioned in my prior post, if you are not sure of the psi rating of your factory rims simply look on the back side of the wheel on one of the spokes. The pressure rating will be cast into the wheel. Also not sure why one would run their 'G' rated tire underinflated at 80psi when pressure requirement for that tire is 120psi. The more underinflated you run the tires the more heat that builds up which is the cause of MANY tire failures. 'E' rated GY Marathons required 80psi, I ran them at 80psi, 'G' rated GY G614's require 120psi, run them at 120psi. You can run them a few lbs under max but NOT 20-40# under. Tim

The GVWR of the 2010 Montana 3400RL is VERY close to 16,000#, I have one. You do not deduct the pin weight when looking at these numbers. Specs are on the Montana web site. If you are looking to upgrade the tires you could go with the Goodyear G614 like many other Montana owners have done, you could also look at the Sailun S637 which is also a G rated tire and quite a bit cheaper. The rims should be rated for the 120#psi as mine are but you can check by looking on the back side of any of the rims. There will be a casting mark on one of the spokes listing the max psi for that rim. Your camper is equipped with the 7000# axels also. Tim

Wow, one would think one would know what the GVW of their 5er is...Glad you gave us the correct information...

In that case, "E" rated tires are out....7,000# axle ratings....As you've stated, go with GY G614's, (which is what I have on my 5er with a GVW of 16,950# and 7,000# rated axles. or the less pricy G rated Sailun S637 ties. Both very good tires, just depends on how much money the OP has to pay for tires.:)

I "think" you're saying the GVW of your 5er is 13,540? If so, you probably have 6,000# rated axles....Believe a G rated tire might be over kill, but your call...I had a Coachmen with 6,000# rated axles and went with Michelin XPS RIBS, they are very expensive, but well worth the money/peace of mind...Also highly recommended is the Bridgestone Duravis...just had a brain toot and can't remember the model number, but "think" it's the R500...seem to be as good as the RIBS, but cost less....

I'd go with an "E" weight tire if the GVW of your 5er is only 13,540#. Odds are very good, at the very least, your rims will take 80 psi.....

  • my new rims had it stamped inside you would have to remove the tire to see it. Probably #85
