Most closets are give or take 24" wide and deep, enough room for a pair of "compact" size units. Search google for "compact washers and dryers". Again, IMO, combo units sacrifice load size/load options in favor of saving space. If you don't have the time or aptitude, any dealer can install your units and the vent. Regardless of who does the work, ensure you can reach the water supply shut valves...move them to the basement if you have to.
We have used Whirlpool separates fulltime since '06 with great service.
