Wasted space on our tow vehicle roof

Anybody here have racks with carriers or baskets on top of your truck to carry items that won't fit in your truck bed or in the fiver?

I feel that the roof of our truck could be useful space. Maybe carry the tote tank up there, or our dog fence, or other bulky items that don't fit easily anywhere else.

Would love to see pictures of your setup if you do that. I'm not talking about kayak racks and bicycle racks, but carriers for other stuff.

Thanks

    Already have an aux tank.

I don't know if anyone has done a study on mileage with rooftop rack and carrier, I'll google and see.

Most reviews of the type of baskets and carriers that I've been checking have said that they didn't notice any significant loss of mileage. The one's that I've been looking at have slanted wind deflectors that make the air flow over the top of the carrier, and most box type carriers have aerodynamic shapes to help in that respect.

Who knows, maybe it'll deflect some air to make the front of our fiver less of a drag. Time will tell.

I once added a bike rack on the roof, and was not used to having anything on the roof.. The first time I added bikes to the rack, I took the truck ( with Bikes on top) to work the day we were leaving. I was driving down the road., and went under an underpass, as I was exiting the other side, a large cup of what looked to be a chocolate milkshake hit the middle of my hood from the bridge.

I quickly ran to the local drive in car wash to rinse it off.... That is when I found out that a pick up with bikes ON THE ROOF does not fit in a 9’ doorway.. ouch ... it was a tough day

Not to make fun of your misfortune, but that was funny. Lol.

I'm not wanting to put anything tall on top. Maybe our tote tank, and doggy fence, and maybe other cumbersome items that don't fit well anywhere else. And after arriving at destination campground we would take that stuff out so that only the racks and basket remain on the roof, so maybe low clearances won't be a problem......at least I hope not.

  • I carry a 12'6" and a 10' Kayak on the roof of our truck using a Yakima roof rack and J bars. Works great and rack easy is put on and take off.
  • Sometimes I carry a bicycle or two on my TV roof. Safer up there with the front wheel(s) removed.
  • Just what we need is even worse frontal presentation for drag.

I thought a roof rack would be a good spot for a water bladder.
