I did that to mine too. Not only were the ducts not sealed, but they had just stuffed the wiring harness into the duct. Fixing those two issues made a really big difference to the airflow out of that unit.

I left the wires in the return duct, what did you do to get them out of there?

I used aluminum duct tape to hold the wires to the sides of the ducting and a/c frame.
