I got sick of having all my external storage in my 5th wheel waaaaay up front near the truck adding to my pin weight.
So I added a new external storage compartment near the rear of my trailer on the passenger/curb side. There is a ton of empty space between the skirt of the trailer side and the frame of the chassis. So figured I could add a floor and two walls and call it a box!
Step 1. Buy a door on ebay for 35 bucks that looks like it will fit. Done.
Step 2. Cut a big hole in the siding of my trailer and make some template for the box out of cardboard. - I will on need 3 pieces of metal to make this box, 1 for the floor(bottom) and 2 side pieces. the back and top of the box will utilize the trailer itself, and of course the front of the box is the door i bought.
Step 3. Box in the box! -I used 14 gauge mild sheet metal. Pay no attention to my amateur welds (they will hold!) As you can see in the picture I actually just welded on the "walls" to the underside of the outriggers. Less metal this way.
Step 4. Install the door and paint the bare metal. done and done.
I was able to put my 1.5 ton floor jack, 12 ton bottle jack, anderson levelers, some locks, and my steel cables I use to tie up the toys at night time. There is still quite a bit of room left over.
Only have about 75lbs of stuff in there, but that's better than 75lbs more in the bed of the truck.
Great idea. I have always thought there is such a waste of usable space back there. Do you have a link to the door you used? If not can you provide the dimensions of the door? Also what did you use to cutout the siding where you put the door?
