I am a long way from retirement and full timing. Nevertheless I dream about it often. Property taxes will motivate me to full time. Not having to pay property taxes will go a long way towards my travel budget.
A house no matter how elaborate is just a shelter. Give/store your keepsakes and mementos with your kids.
Downsizing is really a fact a life you can downsize yourself in a managed controlled way or someone can inherit your life's possessions and downsize it for you when your gone.
While I'm not 100% sure I'll full time at this point. I certainly will not have a large house with lots of maintenance and property taxes.
Ideally I will have a large DP and a small place with RV garage attached to retreat to when required.
