What do I need to know - smart car- toy hauler

You need to be careful in your selection of toy haulers. Be fully aware of what the carrying capacity of the ENTIRE toy hauler is, not just the garage area. You will find that for some toy haulers if you put your smart car in the garage that you literally can't put anything else in the entire toy hauler because you have met the entire carrying capacity of the toy hauler by having your car in it.

One of the challenges you will face is most of the "Smart" cars have low ground clearance. So the ramp angle is a problem for some, many street motorcycles have the same challenge. What happens is as your front end goes up the ramp the rear end drags on the ground. You can add extra ramps to lessen the approach angle.

As already shared weight limits of some ramps and the garage are other factors.

I would look a car haulers with living quarters rather than toy haulers.

If you go on the Escapees RV club forum “HDT” there will be people carrying smarts on the back of trucks who will tell you exactly how much break over angle you need, and smart dimensions.

Also the “Discount Ramps” company might still have a ramp calculator on which you plug in the wheelbase and ground clearance and height dimensions to solve ramp length needed. You can math out the minimums that will work and have those dimensions wheith you when you are trailer shopping.

I’ve seen a few toyhaulers carrying smarts in my travels but can’t say what make and model they were.

My Carriage C-Force would load a smart it has a well thought out ramp with a beaver tail sloped floor section inside.

One problem you may have issues with is high centering at the top of the ramp and possibly angle of approach and departure at the bottom.

I solved all three for my 12ft Fiat by making ramps out of 2x10 boards about 10ft long to lay on top of ramp to extend out the loading length of the ramp.

Then of course you have to figure out a way to secure it.

Loading ramps are already attached to the toyhauler.

We would both need to drive to and from our jobs which would not always be in the same hospital so two cars is a must. Thanks for the info guys!

Having lost my first wife in a traffic accident, I wouldn't put ANYONE in a Smart Car from a safety standpoint. Have you considered a Class A and a better tow'd? We full-time in a fifth wheel and have a car - but my wife drives behind on travel days. She loves it... gets to listen to her audio books, Italian music, etc. We spend less than 2% of our time actually driving and we have a safe vehicle to run around and sight-see in when we get there.

You'll need something that can carry 2,000 pounds and has 10 foot of cargo area.
It sounds as though you are planning on living it for extended periods. You'll enjoy life if it has one or more slide-outs. That would require a very large unit, say 35 foot or longer.
