The only issue with ca dot will be axle/tire numbers and in particular your trucks 6340 rawr and any gross weight for registration if your state has that requirement. A 5th wheel trailer adds little to no weight on the front axle so no worries there.
Gas or diesel trucks all have close to the same scaled rear axle weights so not much axle/tire payload gained or lost with either.
Every insurance company I've delt with since '58 says as long as the truck is legally registered and the vehicle owner insurance payment is paid up they cover wrecks caused by DUI....speeding accidents......accidents caused by operator neglect.... overloading.....falling asleep. However they did say they didn't recommend doing any the above.
