what's this called

On our cougar fiver I've have a leak inside off the antenna crank. Thought it might be the o ring until I got on top and found a large crack in this stuff and it was starting to pull away from the foundation of the antenna square area. In this crack there was dirt and mold. Thinking I was doing the right thing, I dug out and cleaned the bad areas. If it was a good seal, I left it alone. Anyway I just got back from our small local rv store and they didn't know what it was that I had dug out and thought maybe I shouldn't have. It is gray and flexable. It looks like the rv mfg just pours it on about two inches wide and about an inch or less thick. What is this stuff, where can I buy it and will it be compatible with the remaining stuff that I left in there?
  • Pull the antenna and do it right. I found the caulk never adhered to the base metal, although it looked perfect. The cheap putty tape under the base was failing as well. This on a one year old trailer that is garaged whenever it is not in use. Here are some photos: Antenna fix
  • It's a small rv parts store, but I agree, they should have known. But can anyone tell me if I should not have dug out the dirty stuff and can I just pour the new self leveling stuff right in next to the old good seal?

Yes, it will overlap and seal just fine if that is in fact where the leak is.

I had an crank up antenna that leaked and had good caulking around antenna where it is attached to roof. Leak turned out to be what is called "rubber boot" that is inside the antenna mounting. We don't watch much TV so we took off antenna and patched up hole. Others said go with a new/better antenna.

If mounting looks good and water tight don't discount what is called "rubber boot" in the links below.

Of course if this isn't what type you have, disregard.

  • You can try it, but there are no guarantees. If the dirty stuff you peeled off was loose and leaking, the remaining stuff may not be sealing all that well. If it still leaks, you'll wind up peeling everything off and starting over.

RustyJC is correct. Dicor self leveling. Your RV guy didn't know? Wow! Wouldn't go to that RV dealer again.

  • The gray coloring is suspicious, but the antenna bases and other roof penetrations are normally sealed with Dicor self-leveling sealant. See HERE.

If you can peel it all off and get the surfaces prepped, another option would be to use Eternabond tape, which some prefer over the Dicor.
