Wheel Bearing Grease

I'm cleaning and repacking wheel bearings with Valvoline full synthetic grease... this stuff is a nasty black... lacquer thinner will hardly wash the old out... finger nails will never be clean again. Am I wasting $$? Using the best grease? Making a mistake using this type? Appreciate any comments...
