Wheel bearing re packed , price?

What should it cost to have this done! Double axle! Last time I had it done, it was $200.00. I went to a dealer and they wanted 269.00? Thinking that's high!
Any thoughts, other than do it myself, which isn't happening!

  • Sad to say, I am NOT mechanically inclined! I wouldn't know a grease fitting from a brake pad!
    No aptitude for anything mechanical!

  • Question. I put many a mile on a bunch of different trailer and never once repacked the bearings but once a month I went out and used a grease gun one the zerk fittings, is that enough if so why repack and if not why?
  • I checked Discount tires, they don't! Called another tire place that does brake jobs and tire stuff, they don't! So, I am looking.

  • An RV dealer is the last place to have it done, IMHO. When I had a trailer I had the wheel bearings packed at Les Schwab for a fraction of what you paid. I don't think they have shops in TX but you might try another tire dealer.
  • The dealer I bought my Rv from closed! Sad to say, it was sold to someone who knew nothing about Rv's and it went down hill. They charged me $200.00. I had it done at 3k, have about 40k on it now. The local dealer wants the $269.00. Just thought that was high!

  • I'd agree with the good Doctor, there's really no need to do them that often.
I waited more than 40K and they still didn't need it.
  • How often do you get them packed. 50 years ago they used to recommend every 10,000 miles on a car. Now on my pick up it is 60,000 miles or 5 years. I have seen bearings go over 100,000 miles on a pack. I feel it is an over kill to do then so often, and just a way to make money.

Yes, to do a good pack job it takes about 30 minutes per wheel, so $200 would be considered a fair price.

I do my own trailer every 12K to 15K, mostly to inspect brakes, or about 3 or 4 years.
  • It really depends on where you are.
If you were happy with the way that dealer did it last time then it would be well worth the increase to have them do it again. I say that because so many dealers just don't know how to do this simple operation correctly or let the most junior person in the place do it and they screw it up.
