wheel bearing

How many miles do you go before checking the bearing's an grease.I have double axle.
  • Miles is one criterion, Fox. Time, rain, ice/snow/salt and dirt road driving are some others.
  • Manufacturers say every year/12k miles.

IMO, it is wise to pull hubs, pack bearings/check brakes right away upon purchase. Once properly done, I would not worry about bearings for at least three yrs, or 30K miles. Lots of OPINIONS on this subject, and they do vary. :)

  • If the bearings are full of grease and in good shape, every 3-4 years is plenty often IMO. But if you're traveling 15,000+ miles per year, I'd check every 2 years.
  • I would think if you have been in water crossing condtions it may be necessary to do more ofter water tend to get sucked in as it cools down the bearings.
  • I will pull the wheels every spring and check out the bearings at a glance.. I repack every 2 years depending on the miles towed the year prior....
  • when you say repack does that mean flushing in solvent and renewing the grease for the inside and outside bearings.

    Yes.
And it does not mean using the zerk fitting.

These same kinds of bearings were used on cars for many decades. The bearings went 50~100K miles between brake jobs and held up fine.
So I quit messing around with them every year. When ever I did so, I could see it wasn't needed.
With that in mind, I let our last TT go about 40K before repacking. Even then it was a waste of time and totally unneeded.

The yearly suggestion is CYA stuff from the manufacturer.
  • If you are saying you have 7K since new I would HIGHLY advise a repack with QUALITY grease, new seals and adjust the bearings.
