  • No the reason I was asking was for this. Is there a chemical reaction between grease. Not a smart a!!!! Answer like yours
  • He doesn't want to bother cleaning out the old grease (and dirt, metal filings, and crud) before repacking?? Just askin!
  • The OEM Manuals give excellent advice on service intervals and product specifications. I use the Dexter Axle grease specifications plus the Al-Ko Dropping point -as my experience is that bearing failure is a potential if the grease breaks down from heat....the high dropping point with good consistency prevents high temp breakdown of grease. Currently I use Lucas Red-n-Tacky grease.

Use a high temperature, automotive type wheel bearing grease produced
by a reputable manufacturer. The soap type should be lithium complex orequivalent. Use NLGI Grade 2 product
with a minimum dropping point of 440oF
  • There's a specification for grease in wheel bearing use of NLGI-xx and if you start looking at all the different TUBES of grease in the auto parts store you'll find they all meet it.
As long as you repack them your good to go.
  • I've done it for many years on campers and boat trailers, never lost a bearing! The most important part is keeping the seals replaced.
I've owned boats over 50 years and used whatever grease I had available. Never an issue!!
