I'm glad that in a free society, we aren't constrained by "needs". What you may see as a "need", another watching you may define as a "want", or even as "unnecessary". I don't think you want anyone else defining your needs. Once you let them, you will find all of your freedom defined by their "feelings", not by what you need or even want.
We were not originally planning to full time, but wanted something big enough for our family with plenty of room, and a garage big enough for the ATV's that we might decide to get in the future. We went with a 43' Grand Design Momentum 385TH, and we have enough truck to safely manage the load.
I've had people ask my why I need such a large truck, because they feel that I don't need something that big. In a free society, their feelings don't define my needs, and I'm happy to explain that.
Some folks like to have extra room, lots of it. Some look at the "zombie apocalypse" aspect of having a trailer equipped with water and waste tanks, a generator, and systems designed to run off of 12VDC for extended use in a disaster. Some just like to have more than everyone else. It's not up to me to define their needs, and it's great that we are all free enough to fulfill our needs. - JAC1982ExplorerI dunno, to me, there's just a handful of THs that are too heavy to pull safely with a 1 ton. There's still tons of other very nice models that are doable with 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.
I do wonder though, other than for the folks who full time, what the need is for a 45' toy hauler? We're looking at 38'ish models and they feel huge to me, and definitely overkill for just vacationing. But, we want a 12'6" separate garage so we pretty much have to go that big. - fly-boyExplorerAs long as the HD trucks keep getting more and more capable the TH's can get heavier and heavier.
- naturistNomadAs long as people think accidents only happen to other people, and as long as unscrupulous salesmen continue to say absolutely anything to make a sale, there will be people dragging around way too heavy loads with way to small trucks.
- coolbreeze01ExplorerIt happened a few years ago. The larger TH's are too much for 3/4 tons and most 1 tons.
- fj12ryderExplorer IIIA guy at the last RV park we were at was hauling a new 45' Momentum with a couple quads in it with a 3/4 ton truck. If he can do that where is the need for larger/heavier trucks?
- donn0128Explorer IIAs long as people think they can tow the weight of the world with a 1500 or 2500 it wont happen.
