Whew!

After going from an 11' tall FW, our new KZ is 12'8", per the brochure. Went up camping this past weekend, being =very= cognizant of overhanging branches (see my "Well sh!t" post). We were disbursed in the Coconino Forest and ended up running up to Flagstaff on Friday. As we approached the interchange at I-17, I looked up and saw the VERY LARGE 13'0" clearance sign on the overpass you have to go under to head back S to PHX. Another "well sh!t" moment as I've never actually checked my height. Is 4" clearance enough, especially when I know I'm about 2" nose high? Hmmmm... S-i-l went into Flag for fogotten baby stuff the next day, so I rode with him to check some of the other bridges in case I had to go N to get turned around S. Next exit turns out to be 13'10", but would add 18 miles to getting home. S-i-l and I stop on the way back and he pulls his tape out and we measure the walls of the bridge and they're 13'2 and 13'5, with at least 6" of arch. Then we notice that the walls are spray painted with numbers of 13.15 and 13.4, which tallied pretty well with out tape. Headed out yesterday morning and centerlined the truck and to hell with traffic. Just eased through at idle and listened very carefully for any scraping noises. Made it through without an issue. WHEW!

As this is a yearly campout that we do, it was something that didn't even cross my mind when shopping. Yes, there are several outs, but adding, at minimum, 18 miles to the return trip would =really= not please DW, you can bet. :B

As it is, we managed to run out of fresh water on Sat. night, which we'd never done before. I'd only brought 1 7 gal cube instead of my normal 2. I set them on my tailgate for hand-washing and tooth brushing specifically to keep people =out= of the trailer. Well, my 1 cube managed to crack so lost about half =that= water. (Not bad for 14 years old, though.) Got 2 more at home that I'll use next year, but I =will= have some way to transfer water from the jugs to my trailer...just in case. (Not having a gravity fill option is just stupid, IMO.) Water will also be a bit better rationed, as well.

All-in-all, a nice few days with family and friends. Got to introduce the youngest (9 m.o.) to camping and the 3 y.o. granddaughter made a new friend, also 3 and a boy, and they walked all around holding hands. Mom and dad on both sides got some ribbing over that one! :B

  • Know which overpass you are talking about.....my 5vr is 13'4" measured height when hooked up to truck
Been there done that .....and YES centered up I made it thru

Worst places are CGs entrance roads and hanging branches
One ends up driving looking UP
  • I made my wife ride on the rear ladder one time as I attempted to negotiate a 13' tunnel with my alleged 12"6" MH. We cleared it by a few inches, but I could here the AM/FM spring loaded antennae touching the top of the tunnel. Talk about a WHEW!!
