Which 5er would you suggest?

Hi all,

So we're in the early stages of researching an upgrade to a 5th wheel hauler. TV is a 2015 F350 DWR so we shouldn't be limited by weight/payload. We've found a few we liked with our requirements, but wondering if we're missing any that we should consider? The hubs won't consider anything that isn't pretty much brand new. He'd look at a lightly used one that's only a year or two old, but nothing older than that.

Here's our requirements:

-Less than 40' long
-Double axles only, no triples
-12'6" garage minimum (would like to eventually get a 4 seater RZR)
-Separate garage
-Auto leveling (even if it costs extra)
-2 AC minimum
-End price in the 50-60k range (although knowing my H, he'd probably go a bit higher because he's a sucker :))

Some other "pluses" that we'd like and don't have in our current rig, and I think come standard with most haulers of this size these days:
-Bed that can be walked around on both sides
-Rear patio/deck
-At least one other sleeping area that isn't in the garage, loft beds are fine, or a couch, as we might decide to have 1 kid.
-I am not crazy about slides in the "front" meaning, on the door side under the awning, but not a total deal killer.

Don't care too much about double fridges, fireplaces, or other luxury features like that.

We've looked pretty hard at the Keystone Impact 351, but it's a new model so not sure of the reliability just yet. We also looked at a Dutchmen Voltage Triton 3451 but I can't find hardly any info out there about Triton's, I think they're new and/or they're not going to make them past 2016 model year. They don't have auto level available anyway.

So, are we missing anything?
  • Thanks all!

Yeah, we know it's a crapshoot in terms of brands (basically, unless you're in the really high end range, they're all pieces of **** LOL)... that's why we're not entirely tied to brands (even though we've been happy with our current Keystone).

Since we don't plan to live in it anytime soon (we're only in mid 30s), we're not as concerned about a smaller living space... bigger garage is definitely the concern. I just don't want an open garage because I don't want to look at the mess in the garage when I'm getting out of bed in the morning.

And yes, we've noticed there are more models trickling onto the market with 12'6" garages and manufacturers are finally catching on that large garage doesn't need to = huge length/luxury features. The overall length is a non-negotiable for us, we're already limited in some campgrounds in our current camper, and it's going to get rougher the bigger we go. Plus, our HOA has a max outbuilding size of 1200 sq ft, and they've already given us tentative approval for a future build of a 30x40 building (won't be built for probably 5+ years).

It's seeming like the Keystone Impact 351 is still our best option at this point. Hopefully by the time we're ready to go in a year or two, there will be more information about them.
  • The new 4 seater SXS have thrown the toy hauler makers into a frenzy to redesign to accomodate so be sure you're not buying "just in case" and find you've bought a trailer with a huge garage that takes up valuable living space.
  • It's a cr ap-shoot with anything you get. You might get one that's fairly problem free or one that's a nightmare. It doesn't matter the brand name as they're all the same - no quality control at the factory. Buyer beware. We visited Lazydays-Tucson today and were looking at 5th wheels. Redwood is supposed to be an upper-tier, luxury brand but when I tried to close the master bedroom door in a RW38GK, the door was a full one inch wider than the door frame. How'd that one get out of the factory? I doubt I'd ever buy new again. I would suggest one that's a year or two old and has had the bugs worked out of it. Our own story with our Voltage was we were ready to sell it six months after buying it for all the problems we were having with it. Now, with everything fixed, I wouldn't trade it.
  • Take a look at the Jayco 355W. Its a tandem axel, 12 1/2 ft garage, but it is slightly longer than 40' and has a door side slide.
  • You might have trouble finding a large garage in a smaller (two axle) fifth wheel. Most of the garages that we saw when we were shopping earlier this year were 12'.

You might have to choose between a longer fiver + large garage vs. shorter fiver and open floor plan (no garage).

If you add one more axle and a couple more feet, you'll probably have more luck finding the longer garage.
  • Look at their sister company too. Name excapes me at the moment.

Yeah unfortunately they don't have any 5th wheel toy haulers... I've heard nothing but good things about them.

I personally wouldn't mind one of their truck campers and we can just pull the RZR in a trailer behind, but H won't have that :)
