I have had several 4X4's mostly due to owning a home near a ski area. Town varies from the 7000 to 8000 foot range but the parking lot at the main lodge is about 9000 feet.
We have been buried in snow, literally buried overnight, once we were buried three times in two days.
In about 20 years, I never got stuck so bad I couldn't put chains on. I finally bought a 4X4 International Harvester Scout II, nice truck. Never used the four wheel drive. Had a Jeep Cherokee Chief then a Mazda B4000 4X4 truck, never used four wheel drive even to pull someone out of a snow drift.
The DW had two Explorers with 4X4, used it one time coming down the coast from Yachats, Oregon in a major storm and we had to get back to LA due to a family emergency.
I am considering a 1984 F250 Ranger Pick Up with 4X4, it's free so no big deal, now I'll have to figure out what to use it for.
Just my experience, nothing else.
