Why 4 X 4

Every place you look, every dealer it's all 4 X 4's. I have a 4 X 4 and never use it. Why is it so popular? Is there anyone out there that has a 2 X 4 and is unhappy with the truck? How about with a 4 X 4? My first 2 trucks I bought off the lot hence the 4 X 4. I'm looking to order and almost feel ashamed to consider a 2 X 4. I pull a 12,000# 5th wheel. No mud holes and backroads. Thanks.

And diesel, but that is another post.
  • Lots of 2wd trucks out here. I'm sure it depends on where you live and the local climate.

    Why, cheap insurance!
Backing up hill on gravel, sudden snow storm!
    Wet grass!
  • I had a 2WD for a few years while living here in Kansas City. The second winter in, we had a 4" snow and I got stuck trying to get into a gas station. I vowed never to buy a 2WD as long as I lived in the midwest. A front wheel drive car gets better snow traction than a 2WD truck. Better to have it and not need it than not have it and need it....at least that's my angle on 4WD.
  • You just can't beat 4 Low for backing into the perfect camping spot when you're off the beaten path, or some times in State or Local parks. Just put it in 4 Low and just let the engine idle while backing in.
  • I had several 2WD trucks before getting a 4WD. I didn't like them. They got stuck in everything from wet grass to mud. I had a brand new 2WD truck get stuck on a wet cement driveway (backing out).
I've had need to use 4WD pushing TT's into damp sites. I also needed to transport elderly parents in the snow.
So I like my 4WD and I will get every penny back on it when I trade.

It's all about getting what you want and need.

Hopefully this wont turn into another thread where soemone tries to suggest someone else is stupid (or were mystified) for thier choice.
  • Sadly is the mystique behind the 4x4 myth. I bought and loved my 4x2 for 11 years, but could not sell it for anything. There are reasons for a 4x4, but towing a large trailer strictly on pavement certainally is not one of them.
  • The old joke is that with 4 X 4 you will just get stuck further from the highway. :B
  • It’s what sells. Usually the only 2wd trucks in the HD anymore are the work trucks where fleet managers are trying to get the cheapest truck available. I trade vehicles every few years so I get it for resale as a 2wd will not hold value. I don’t even think you can get the upper trims in 2wd anymore. I just looked and the limited is 4wd on but you can still get a 2wd anything else.
