There are some great lightweight fifth wheel hitches available that work really well, so that's a non-issue.
If you want to use a topper while towing, obviously that won't work with a fifth wheel. My solution to that was a Softopper. It takes about five minutes to install or remove and works really well, and it's perfect for a guy like me who doesn't want a topper except on those occasions where I really need one.
