Besides the telltale signs mentioned, you can measure the amount of flex. If the unit is at a dealer lot, most use a forklift to move units around. They can lift the unit at the pin, lower it til the landing gear just touches the ground, measure the height at the pin, then lower the unit fully and re measure. Anything over 1/2 inch is suspect. Much more difficult w/o a forklift but still possible.
