Thank you, all above who commented on my DEF comments. I do not own any trucks that require DEF. However I do have a new diesel tractor that requires DEF. My comment about temperature problems with DEF are our own experience.
For my information, for the trucks that have DEF heaters, as mentioned above, do the heaters operate off the truck battery? Here in Colorado, on our ranches, the temperture almost every night through the winter requires that we had to improvise heat on the DEF tank, both on the bulk and tractor tanks, in order to start the tractor in the mornings to drive the tractor. Actually on both of our and neighbors ranches, we expect winter temperatures to be lower than Zero degrees every night through the winters, often minus 30 or 40 degrees.
When a DEF equiped truck is parked over night, does the truck have a built in heater from the battery, or external power source, to keep the DEF from chiling below freezing point? If it is a battery power source, how long can a truck be parked with the engine not running without running the battery down keeping the DEF above freezing? My semi trucks often park over night at temperatures far below Zero. And, often park over a weekend and/or more when the driver is required to take his DOT required break.
I am interested in others experience since I may be required to buy DEF equiped trucks in the future.
