We live in MN, it gets cold here. I've never worried about the black flush line when winterizing (many years) and it still seems to work fine. I suspect it's built to drain free each time, otherwise I certainly would have seen a problem by now.
FWIW, I used the air method to winterize for several years...until one spring a few years ago I found a broken fitting under the kitchen sink (it got WET when we were just about to take our first trip of the year). Since then I've used the pink stuff...hmm...maybe it's time again this weekend...
