I use my OFF-ROAD 14RT POPUP camper on National Forest roads all the time. Not an Issue with me. One of my favorite places I have to cross a rock bed creek...
Camping off the power grid sure has its PLUSES if you are in to that style of camping...

Camp Doris - Wichita Mtns Wildlife Refuge - Medicine Park, OKLA
Of course this is a different situation you might be up against. I have also been to a couple of campgrounds that have a hair-pin turns in them and have had a couple of close calls of dragging my sides. A TT or Fifth wheel would definitely be in harms way here. These sites are within 50-100 miles of here in Virginia as well...
The road to CHEAHA State Park near Talladega, Alabama off of I20 is not all that bad. Coming up from the South through the Talladega Natl Forest is a totally different story however... Been both ways a few times... CHEAHA is a great camping spot for us...
Even the main road though the Smoky Mtn National Park has it hazards of low overhang sharp curves that catch TT and Fifth wheel trailers by surprise. The Blue Ridge Parkway also has its hazards associated with some tunnels that are too low on the sides...
You just have to be aware of your surroundings getting from Point A to Point B.
