Advice for flying trips while on the road

I'm full time and I want to fly somewhere for Christmas. Ideally this would be from the Orlando area.

Just wondering if people had any advice how to handle trips like that? I'm thinking find a campground that might allow storage for a fee (theoretically less than a site fee) for that week. Then just drive to the airport and park my truck there.

Anyway, any good advice or experience with trips like this? If anyone knows of a good place around Orlando that might work for this - even better.

Thanks!

  • I just did this in Las Vegas. The RV park that I was at supposedly had storage spots with electric (I didn't want to have to empty my fridge). But I didn't find out until the last minute that they didn't have anything big enough to fit my camper.

I called 10-15 different storage places and RV parks. None offered electric (well, the indoor one did for $700 for the 2 weeks?!!?) and only a couple of RV parks would give me a discounted rate. Once I finally settled on a place, I found that I couldn't get to my camper on my return flight because of their gate hours. We ultimately just stored the truck and camper at the airport's oversize parking. We dumped the fridge out and gave free alcohol to our camping neighbors.

I was nervous as the lot wasn't as secure as an actual storage lot, but after 2 weeks- the camper and truck were still there and hadn't been messed with. They also would have allowed us to stay in the lot overnight before hand and afterwards.
  • I lived in the Orlando area for about 20 years and have a piece of advice.

I don't know where you're going or which carrier you're using, but consider going out of the airport in Sanford if possible. It's MUCH less busy. One time I dropped my daughter at the door and by the time I got back on the freeway, she had already gotten thru security and was at her gate. It had to be less then 10 minutes.

I do realize that your chosen carrier may not fly out of there so this might not work out.
  • If you are gone less than 2 weeks you could use a state park, or I usually just leave it at the park where I long term.
  • I've left my RV temporarily in a Public Storage lot. PS offers $1 first months rent. However, they have various "setup" fees which will raise the price past $1 but it's still a deal for a short term, up to one month rental.

  • We left our rig in an RV park while we spent a week in the Keys. Just let the owners know we'd be gone and it worked out fine. Did the similar thing for ax4 day long weekend away and also was fine. Since we full-time and our rig contains all our belongings, the little extra $ versus storage fees was worthwhile.
  • Oh yeah, I should mention - 25'TT. And it's just me.

Sounds like Park to Fly won't take big trailers... but I found a similar place "Park Bark and Fly" that sounds like they can do it... not cheap with the truck and the trailer (like $15/day - truck+trailer) but it's an option.

Stage Stop CG sounds promising - I'll give them a call.
  • Check with park to fly in Orlando - they keep your vehicle, charge less than airport parking fees, and run a shuttle to the airport on demand. We've left our car there(motorhome's in a seasonal site west of Orlando), and I know they say "oversize vehicles may cost more". It's a secured lot.

Stage Stop CG in Winter Garden will let you store your rig. Not that far from McCoy.
  • Asking the RV park is a good choice. Are there two of you? Are you both going? We've taken trips to see the kids but one of us went at a time. The other stayed in the RV park.

If you stay in a motel near the airport the previous night, many will let you leave your vehicle/RV there during your trip. Just ask.

Check out storage facilities near the area for short-term storage.

I wouldn't trust to leave it at the airport and I certainly wouldn't leave it at a WalMart or Cracker Barrel. That's not what those places are for!!
  • I've left my Pickup Truck camper at the off airport lots many times. When ever I asked they even let me sleep in the camper the night before my flight. In every case they let me park in a remote area and even picked me up in the AM with the shuttle bus. More than once they brought coffee!!!

I haven't tried this yet with my travel trailer but i don't see why it would be a problem.

With the truck camper I used this a few times just to overnight instead of a Walmart or Cracker Barrel. Hard to find a more safe place to spend the night and usually only around $10
