We are looking for relatively cheap campgrounds in Colorado. We are also curious about if there are alternative places other than campgrounds to stay, such as renting out a lot?

My suggestion would be Clear Creek Campground located in Golden, Co.
Owned by the city with FHU. We've stayed there before they have quite a few long term people.
