I was talking with our 16 year old son about this thread as were were cleaning up the DR Brush Mower and golf car today that we use around the place and have a 15 gallon spray rig mounted on the rear for spraying round up. Yesterday we redid the plumbing for one 4' Aqua Glass shower unit that is 23 years old and worked with the mini horses for a while.
His take was that perhaps some are more comfortable keeping up a place than others is one factor. I think Nancy's approach fits a lot of us. A low maintenance handicap accessible home can give one a lot of comfort as we age. Hopefully we all stay mobile but having a very accessible home is great following even a hip or knee replacement.
Being able to hit the road or come off the road on a moment's notice is one type of freedom that is nice.
