Down the A is close. After paying 6.7% on a motor vehicle you only pay a $12-20 tag fee each year. It might be worth trading in your old car on something newer (once you become a GA resident) as NORMALLY you only pay sales tax on the difference in value... not sure about this new 6.7% tax law. This does NOT apply to trailers (still have to pay annual tax) BUT if you buy a used one from an individual there is no GA sales tax.
At age 62 the first $32K of income is GA income tax free (6% normally) per person. At age 65 it increases to $65K although the original law had it increasing to unlimited but they stopped it a $65K two years ago.
GA property taxes are fairly reasonable but differ by each counties millage rate. Counties around Atlanta are close to $40/thousand while some outside of ATl have only $15 to $20/thousand. Once you know a counties millage rate, you only use it on the 40% value to determine the tax amount, you do not use the 100% value... do not know why on only 40% ??? In most counties the homestead exemption is fairly small ($5K) although some have gone to $25K.
You have to be a Georgia veteran (enlisted in GA) to get a free driver's licence. I do not believe tags are free for Ga veterans as I rarely miss a tax loop hole but I'm going to call this morning to make sure. If I've missed this one I'm going to be really upset with myself.:M or is it :S
DANG... I could have been getting two free tags as a Ga veteran during war time. Also any veteran after living in GA for two years and serving during war time can get a free driver's license. For more detailed info click here.
