Boondocking in Michigan

Hello -

I'm in the process of upgrading my battery bank and adding solar, in preparation for a trip to Arizona in the fall. Before taking that trip I'd like to try my hand at dry camping a little closer to home during the summer. Does anyone have any favorite places in Michigan's lower peninsula to boondock? I'd like it to be some place relatively close to Lake Michigan, maybe a nearby inland lake, and not TOO desolate. My wife is not yet ready for camping with NOBODY else around. Baby steps :D

I appreciate any suggestions.

  • Just north of ScottVillegas, West of 31. National forest campground. Name escapes me at the moment
  • Hmm, I'm familiar with a number of state forest campgrounds, but that is one I've not heard of. I'll look it up.

    Any other favorites out there?
  • There are many State Forrest CG's without hookups in the lower. Have a look at the DNR camping site....

One of our favorites is Tomahawk Creek Flooding north of Atlanta, MI. But watch out for Elk!
