Bug Screens on Vents

Hi.
I have been looking at the pre made mud dauber screens to keep the critters out of the fridge, heater vents but have a question.....
The ones sold on line look like they have big holes, and don't seem like they will keep mosquitos, bees, and smaller insects out.

Do all the vents need to have that much air circulation, or is it ok to make my own out of window screen material? Is there any problem with the window screen material say, over the furnace vent due to heat? Are these premade screens sufficient?

Do not have a lot of critter experience being from Az, but reading the posts from the Midwest, Florida, Georgia, etc. it appears bugs will soon be just another part of our full time lifestyle.

Please let me know what your exoerience has been out there on the road.

Thanks so much. Looking forward to all of your knowledge.
  • I've used those screens successfully on two different fivers. They DO keep the mud daubers out. That's only so the buggers don't build their nests in the burner assembly which makes the unit inoperable until they are cleaned out. I went for years doing that occasionally until I installed the screens.

I would not think it a good idea to use regular screening material. The exhaust has high heat and would damage any screen that wasn't as heavy duty as these.

The screens don't need to keep mosquitoes or other bugs out since they can't get the your living area through those vents.

  • Air/fuel ratio is critical on RV propane appliances.......that is why mfg. doesn't provide them OR recommend them.

    That being said.......
IF using the aftermarket ones......make sure you keep them clean/clear.
Fine mesh would keep you busy cleaning
  • I did cut and tape screening material in my refer vents.A good idea I think.
  • Use metal screen, not fiberglass screen - speaking from experience...
  • My camping buddies had the mud daubers build a nest in their motorhome's furnace. They took it to Camping World, and supposedly they cleaned them out. First night they had to use the heater, the MH started to smell, and the CO alram went off. An RV tech down the road came, and had to completley pull the heater out of the MH to get to all the nests. Fortuneatly, CW refunded my friend her money, since they didn't do the job right. But, ask yourself if you want to have your heater pulled out for nothing other than to have mud dauber nests cleaned out, when you could have just used that $10 screen. I have them on my furnace and water heater. Probably should put them on the fridge too, but those covers are easy to get off and inspect for nests.

Oh, and in addition to not using regular screen door type screen or fiberglass screen, do not use sun screen. :-)
