During the last 4 1/2 years we have averaged less than $2.00 per night in campground fees. We Volunteer. Two summers we had a site overlooking the Pacific ocean, cost 20 hrs per person per wk as interpretive hosts. Two winters in South Florida learning about the Everglades and myself doing maintenance and the wife developing and giving a guided tour for the physically challenged on an 8 passenger golf cart, 24hrs per person. We did public use counts by kayak and Visitor center service, again 24 hrs per person per week. Last summer we started and ran a kayak program for seniors and another for family's with a little maintenance to fill out our 24 hrs. Next summer we're headed to Alaska, the hours requirement is a little more 32, but we think it's worth it to spend 10 weeks volunteering as the work is always enjoyable and educational.
What we find is that staying awhile at one location allows us to really get to know the area and working with locals we get the history and the really good places to explore. Our shortest volunteer position has been 6 weeks our longest 7 months.
