You have received a lot of advice about monthly stays and volunteering. These seem to be inconsistant with your plan.
I think one needs to define for themselves, what they consider retirement/work. Does your definition of retirement include workamping/volunteering X number of hours/week for X weeks or months in return for an RV site to keep costs down or working at Amazon, gate guarding or the sugar beet harvest part of the year to earn enough to travel the rest of the year? I am not sure there are many volunteer opportunities for only a month and do know that many are for a whole season.
One also needs to consider if, how much and where they want to travel. Do they want to just move from a warm winter location to a cooler summer location taking advantage of long term rates and places like the BLM LTVAs? Do they want to travel mostly from one membership park to another? Do they want to mostly boondock?
As an example of cost, our 47 day trip around New Mexico September/October 2013 was a little over 1,100 miles destination to destination according to Streets and Trips. In and around would have to be added to that. Total fuel cost was a little over $1,000. Campground fees (we always had at least electric) were just about $1,100 ($24/night) while in New Mexico.
Hope this helps!
