Since you have been camping so long you have an idea of the type of campgrounds that you enjoy staying in, a big plus. We chose to buy new and not wonder what someone else has already changed, after a few months of learning the new RV we have gotten to know how to maintain and fix most everything.
Our situation is similar to yours in finances, we are 63 and 59. I have been pleased so far in how little it costs us to live this way, we stay in state and federal parks when available, usually stop for between a week and a month depending on the area we are in and the number of things we want to see. We also try not to move more than 300 miles each time we do relocate.
You seem to be in a position that most people who do this would be comfortable with so I would suggest, that like some have already said, worst case you will have a very nice extended vacation.
