You are correct.

In California the regs vary by county with each sheriff deciding on the policy and procedure that is used to decide whether and how to issue a permit. In Kern county which is very rural there are 6,000 permits issued, but in Monterey county the number is 156 in total.

Thanks for the link! It appears that the process for obtaining a CCW in SD is a bit simpler than it was in KS. I will get the ball rolling on the application as soon as we are finalized with our new address.

I appreciate all the responses of people trying to help me find an answer to my question, but you hit the nail on the head! I am fully aware of what reciprocity refers to as I already have a CCW permit. Unfortunately for my current dilemma (moving to a new state)reciprocity has nothing to do with my solution.

Could you just get a permit or two from states which issue them to non-residents? Utah and Florida are a common combo, from what I read. Those two give you a lot of coverage.

Thanks for the link! It appears that the process for obtaining a CCW in SD is a bit simpler than it was in KS. I will get the ball rolling on the application as soon as we are finalized with our new address.

YES you will need a SD address first
Then you will need to physically be in the SD County where your address is for a minimum of 30 days IMMEDIATELY PRIOR to applying for the temporary permit
Then within 5 days you will get the temporary permit
Then 7-10 days later you can go back to Sheriffs Office and get your CCW....valid for 5 yrs.
Roughly 45 days total time (30 days Prior plus 10-15 days after applying)

I believe the original poster was hoping that there was a quick approach since he already has a permit from another state that is recognized by SD.
