You are allowed to own property anywhere you want, and can own multiple vacation properties in various states. That alone does not establish your residency. If you decide to do it, doing it part way thru the year so that you file a part-year resident tax return with the state. You would use the new address that is provided to you as your resident address and show yourself as a part-year resident for 2016. After that if you still owned the house you would file as a non-resident with NY. SD is probably cheaper than FL, but since you go to FL anyway you could consider doing residency there also. We use Your Best Address in Sioux Falls. Go to their website and there are copies of documents etc. You can register your vehicles (all of them) prior to going there for your drivers licenses and establishing the residency. Larry was very helpful when we did this after selling our house in MI. Insurance we got the Dougherty Ins in Sioux Falls. They can give you quotes for various companies and do have companies that provide full-timers coverage. If you do this, change everything over just as if you moved.
