Thank you, doxiemom11, for the helpful info. I'd like to do the change in residency from NY to SD in the next few weeks, so, as 'residents' of South Dakota, we won't pay the huge sales tax on our rv. Just want to make sure I understand what you wrote,.. << If you decide to do it, doing it part way thru the year so that you file a part-year resident tax return with the state. You would use the new address that is provided to you as your resident address and show yourself as a part-year resident for 2016.>>
Do you mean we would file as part-year residents of both NY and SD, if we pull off the change in address by the end of Dec.2016 ? I take it, taxes/tax breaks prorated between the 2 states?
A big consideration is also our Medigap (Medicare Supplemental) Plans & Medicare Part D Prescription Plan. Both are MUCH cheaper in SD than in NY or FL.
All in all, Florida is not much cheaper than NY (aside from no state income tax) - and more expensive for healthcare. SD is the best choice for us.
Be careful in changing to South Dakota residency. If you are retired I've heard there are issues with Medicare in that state. I honestly do not remember what the issues was but I would take a serious look at all areas of medical insurance before you make the switch.
