A GPS -- which does not need a cell connection. We use a Rand McNally 7720 which has a built-in campground database.
BTW, we traveled across Kansas last year on HWY 36 and had a Verizon 4G connection most of the way.

Excellent qs -- it depends. If we're heading toward a "destination" (a campground where you plan to stay for a while), then we may book the destination weeks in advance. On the other hand, we may just book a place the day we will camp.
