We also have benchmarks and use them extensively.
We use a combination of both paper and digital.
When we get to a state, we hit the welcome center because one never knows what one might find. We have found interesting sites and attractions this way.
We use tons of online resources to map how and where to go.
We have a spreadsheet of our budget, mileage, and maintenance.
We have a word document of our proposed route and another with bits and pieces of locations/attractions/boondocking sites I have pulled off the internet from blogs and such.
We use an online calendar to note events or locations we want to be and update it with where and how long we stayed.
I think it would be nearly impossible to only use one or the other.
