...and as another asked, are you speaking of a handgun or a long gun? You will not be able to take a handgun into Canada at all. If you try you risk some very serious consequences. They do very thorough searches at the drop of a hat.
I 100% agree with this thought! Contact a firearms dealer near your re-entry point to the US and make arrangements to receive and store your gun(s) and any ammunition for you to pickup at a future date.
