When I travel I usually stay put for at least a month and use my toad, a 2005 Dodge Caravan, to thoroughly explore the area, as well as for impromptu camping. In fact speaking of impromptu camping, in May-June of this year I put my RV in storage and took a +12,000 road trip starting from southeast Arizona all through western Canada and Alaska sleeping and living in the Caravan. I had such a wonderful time it was hard to believe that I’m 68 years old, what great fun!
I spend winters somewhere reasonably warm and sunny. Due to a problem with winter depression (SAD), winter sunshine is very important to me. So far I’ve spent one winter in Texas and two winters in southeast Arizona. I prefer SE Arizona, It’s always sunny, the weathers cool but not so cold as to cause RV living hassles and there’s excellent quail hunting. I’m currently spending the month in the Ruidoso NM area and the next two months will be in Illinois where I plan to visit friends scattered throughout the state. On my return to SE Arizona I’ll stop in Iowa for some pheasant hunting and Denver to visit my son.
I’ve spent my working career as a geologist so I’m hoping next summer to line up a National Park gig in one of their geological interpretation centers, probably as a volunteer.
BTW I roll the way I do because I’m on an extremely tight budget and I do what financially works for me while still allowing me to explore this beautiful country and enjoy life.
Steve
PS as others have said, do what works best for you.
