We've boondocked often with our 40' motorhome up to 20 miles off pavement. Of course, it has to be a good gravel road - no boulder hopping. :) If in doubt, disconnect the car and scout it out.
We've also dry camped in national parks and national forests without issue. It can be done. Again...not EVERY park but then a 30' won't fit in EVERY park either. We've been in Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Teton, Rocky Mtn., Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Big Bend, etc. and hundreds of forest service campgrounds - in the West.
It all depends how remote and rustic a place you want to go for boondocking. Otherwise, you can definitely do it with a big rig.
