Full timers-repairs

Full timers. Where do you go to make repairs if you want to do the work yourself? Do campgrounds let you as long as you are not pulling your brakes or axles etc?(major type repair). I have done minor repairs-no one seemed to mind. Thank for the info.

  • I have a home base that I go to in the winters so all major type stuff will be done there. I did have a wheel brake assembly replaced at a state park in Florida last year, but that was a safety issue and the park didn't mind.
  • My CG is fine with most repairs. In fact they have a list of contractors that will come to CG and do repairs and or construction
  • Since we fulltime, I have done all sorts of repairs and upgrades at CGs.

When we traded for our new truck I installed the 5th Wheel hitch in the new truck at a CG in Florida. (The truck dealer removed the old hitch from the truck we traded in)Since we went from a 6.5 Ft bed to a 8 Ft bed I sold the slider assembly and bought fixed mount brackets then remounted the head assembly.

I installed our Reico Titan Leveling System at a GA State Park.

I repacked our wheel bearings and inspected the brakes at a CG in Florida.

When living on the road, where else are you to do repairs.

I usually do not ask, (sometimes it is better to ask for forgiveness than permission) I watch the CG and see what others are doing, if there are long-term or fulltime residents at a CG then they have to do repairs at their site!

How do you like the Titan Leveling System?

We really like it, it works very good, it is not fully automatic but only takes a few minutes with the remote.

It was the right choice for us, we move every 2 to 3 weeks so we use it quite a bit.

Great value leveling system for under $2500
  • In my eleven years of full timing experience I have found that most don't allow maintenance but some do.
One where we stayed in NH let me install a fan clutch in my last motor home -in fact he came down and gave me a hand with a bolt that was very hard to reach with the wrenches I had.
He was also okay with me installing brake pads on my Honda.

We were lucky enough to have an RV site available at my wife's sisters commercial peach orchard in CO. That is where I did things like installing laminate flooring in my present coach.
  • We try to have most work done at shops. If it's an emergency, the park usually doesn't mind if you explain the situation. They also usually have mobile techs you can call that they allow to come into their park. If they say no and we can wait, we honor their rules. We also don't make or leave a mess.
  • We boondock all the time, so there is never a question of whether someone will approve of us doing repairs. So far all our repairs and installations have been small-ish projects.

Our biggest project was installing 490 watts of solar panels on the roof and wiring them up to a charge controller. We did that while boondocking near Flagstaff Arizona.

It was fine -- but it would have been nice to have been closer to Home Depot during that project!!!
