We full-timed for 8 years in a 33' 5th wheel with one slide. It worked very well. Then friends got us hooked on 4-wheeling and after 8 years in the 5th wheel it was time to upgrade anyway. We also hated driving the diesel truck everywhere - you can't sneak up on the animals in the forest! :) So...for the past 8 years we've had our 40' motorhome and tow a Jeep Liberty. We specifically chose only 2 slides - both on the same side. We get into a lot of heavily treed areas and it's easier to maneuver at the campsites with only two slides. It's been more than enough room. We have had so much fun in the Jeep Liberty and have met some wonderful folks while 4-wheeling. As far as the 40' motorhome, we honesty have no problems using public parks - national, state, forest service, COE, county and city parks. You mentioned Glacier, we've stayed at Apgar in the park with our 40'. We mostly travel west of the Mississippi but have done lots in the southeast, too. We always find spots to fit. You just have to do your research. We've stayed in the Utah national parks, Rocky Mtn. Nat'l and all along the Oregon coast in state parks, across Canada and up to Alaska, to name a few. We even take our 40' MH offroad to boondock in fabulous places. Like others have said, it's up to YOU alone to figure out what works for you. Have fun planning and hope you're able to really do it. It's a wonderful lifestyle and we wouldn't have changed a thing!!
