Fulltiming in a 5'ver - Manufacturers

Are there 5'vers that are designed for full-timing or four season living? I realize that the insulation factor plays a big part. I live in Florida so not worried about the cold, but does get warm. I would be looking to purchase used one.

Also, can a refrigerator in an existing unit be replaced with a residential size one? It seems for full-timing with the smaller refrig you would be running to the store every couple of days.

  • I lived in my 5th wheel...parked....for 3 years and did just fine with my double door RV fridge and freezer. We did get a dorm size refrigerator for sodas, beer and the occasional watermelon that we kept on our patio.
However, we are looking at new 5ers and I'm going to go residential refrigerator this time.
  • We full time and wintered out in Richmond,VA this year with no problems. We opted for the residential fridge with no regrets.
Haven't been able to ride the cycle much due to the snow. Will rethink where we winter next year depending on how much DW wants to be near grandkids.
  • A used Newmar would be a good choice as well - they no longer make fivers.

Friends just purchased a new Redwood fiver they state right up front on the website that they are for full time living. Looks really nice and so far - 2 weeks - they are happy with it.

We survive four to five months every winter with the RV fridge. We did put a small auxiliary freezer in our front compartment and that provides a lot of relief.
  • There are also ,Excel,DRV ( Mobile Suites) and NU Wa.
The residential fridge is almost a must. With a RV fridge. You
have to defrost every 2-3 weeks. Al depends on the humidity
an ice usage. Another issue with these is weight.
Almost need a one ton DRW. Or larger.
    IMHO
  • I have a Carriage Cameo that is 4 season and is built very well. They went belly up toward the end of 2012. Most of the employees went to another company which is building a very close copy of the Carriage. Check out Lifestyle.
  • Heartland would be my recommendation.

If you're not worried about using propane for your fridge, yes, most are replaceable. However, once you're full timing, you'll find that you'll want the store to warehouse things. There's just not enough space (including the fridge). I think you'll be going to the store every couple of days in any event. We do.
  • Would not being staying in one spot. My thinking now is move every couple of months or so. I want the freedom to go wherever I want.
  • To answer the second? Yes. Lots of folks have done it.
To answer the first? Heartland and Mobile Suites are a couple that Come to mind.
Now a question for you. Are you living in one place? If so look at a park model. More residential feel for the same dollar.
