You can hang pictures and things to make your place more homey. Add curtains, throw rugs, pillows, change the comforter etc. To hang things that are not heavy, many people use the 3m command strips. We used that putty type stuff. For a calendar that has photos of the kids and grandkids (wall calendar) I use a small push pin. I have also added some wall decorations that have plants and ivy, I've changed the wallpaper border to something I liked. Sounds like you have a decorating project to do.
