Jane, you sound like you are very lonely, and living like a gypsy is probably not a good fit for someone who values stability and long term personal relationships. I agree with everyone else...find a nice spot after your visit home this summer where you can spend the fall and winter and have the time to get involved in social activities.
Leaving your home and friends is always an adjustment, no matter how much you want to try a new lifestyle. Mourning the loss of what you have known is normal. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Figure out what will make it work for you and then discuss it with your DH. It sounds like he is willing to support what will make you happy.
There are lots of definitions and ways of being "full-time" and it's not a one size fit's all. Everyone has to find the balance that works for them.
