Health insurance ??!!??

Hello all,

MY wife and I are down to about 6 months till she retires. We are working on the details now. But I almost fell to the floor when I heard what it is going to cost in health insurance. They want $1600 A MONTH. Is this correct? What are you all paying and is there a better option. We will be on a tight budget as it is. And this is taking 1/2 of our income.

  • As a retiree and if your going to be 65 plus you get medicare and purchase a supplement. There are lots of supplements that are nearly free, and can run to as high as you want to pay. I am a vet so I qualify for VA, DW uses a Kaiser supplement that is less than a hundred dollars a month. Plans are out there, you just need to go shopping.

Good observation here. If you're going to be fulltimers, check rates from some of the more popular fulltiming domiciles (SD, FL, TX). Not sure what your fulltiming style will be but make sure your coverage fits your travel plans.
  • I will be entering into Medicare July 1, this year. My wife is 62. We're both retiring in July.

My monthly premiums will be $241.68. That covers parts A, B, D, as well as a supplement.

We're shopping for an affordable (affordable for us) plan for my wife. Based upon feedback from some friends in similar circumstances (husband is 65, wife is 62, both recently retired) we anticipate her premiums will be in the range of $350 to $450 monthly.

We just need to get her and us through the next 2.5 years then, she too will enter into Medicare.

Six months will get you down to open enrollment on the ACA. Have you gone there to get a price? Please don't listen to what people say as there are too many political views given. Go straight to the source and get the correct answer.

    Exactly.

  • We are two seniors and I pay $386 per month for a supplement to Medicare with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. My Wife is a retired Teacher and has hers paid for.

  • "They want $1600 A MONTH. Is this correct?"...to some degree the cost of healthcare insurance is dependent on where you live (and greedy insurance companies). If you are considering relocating in retirement, healthcare costs are now part of the equation.
